Historic victory for the centre-right in Umbria

On Sunday 27 October, the centre-right coalition scored a historic victory in Umbria. Umbria's regional elections saw candidate Donatella Tesei, supported by the centre-right coalition, receive more than 57% of the vote and thus become president of the region. Umbria, which has traditionally been a stronghold for the centre-left in Italy, will now be governed by the centre-right.

The centre-right candidate beat Vincenzo Bianconi, who was backed by the centre-left forces and the 5-Star Movement, by more than 20 percentage points. The regional elections in Umbria saw a first defeat for the alliance between the Democratic Party and the 5-Star Movement, which for the first time fielded a joint candidate at the regional level.

The election brought good news to both the Brothers of Italy and the League, which garnered 10.4% and 36.9% of the vote respectively. In the European Committee of the Regions, members of the Brothers of Italy and the League are affiliated to the European Conservatives and Reformists Group.
