Northern Italy battles coronavirus outbreak

On February 21st the regions of Lombardy and Veneto became immersed in an incessant fight against the continued spread of the global pandemic. The coronavirus (Covid-19) spawned an outbreak, heavily affecting the regions of Lombardy with 212 infected and Veneto with 38 infected. As of 25th February, 7 deaths have been recorded in Italy but the situation fluctuates rapidly day to day.
ECR members are among those at the forefront, coordinating emergency actions to contain the spread of the virus. President of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia said February 21st "It's like a war, I sleep three hours a night, I feel responsible for the health of the Venetians and I will do everything within my authority to keep more Venetians from contracting the virus.
Similarly in Lombardy, President Attilio Fontana is working tirelessly to ensure the virus does not spread outside the quarantined "red areas." The quarantine decreed eleven municipalities as "red areas" where the quarantine is strictly enforced. President Fontana commented "Our doctors, our healthcare professionals and all those involved in this public health emergency are working non-stop."
As of February 25th all regions in Northern Italy have closed all schools and universities. Furthermore, in Lombardy region many key events were cancelled, as public meeting places, cinemas, theatres, museums etc. were closed. The same measures were applied in Veneto where the famous carnival was stopped early.
