Anna Magyar: EU must urgently address demographic decline

In a high-level debate with the EU Commissioner for democracy and demography ECR VP Anna Magyar warned that two of the most worrying trends affecting the population of regions are demographic decline, and brain drain.

Brain drain has led to regions continuously losing local talented young people. "They are leaving due to a lack of opportunities, and opportunities are declining because young people are leaving. This vicious cycle eventually leads to a slow emptying of regions" she added.

Demographic decline's long-term consequences include general economic stagnation, and financial instability, especially in smaller regions. "The ECR Group strongly supports the investment in successful family-friendly policies, which will help us ensure our young people can start families without having to leave their homeland".

Magyar, Csongrád-Csanád County Council Member, asserted that the EU must take swift action to support regions in keeping their workforce. In that sense, "reskilling and upskilling will be crucial to help workers develop the skills needed to remain competitive during the green and digital transition", she concluded.
