ECR ENVE Coordinator Sebastian Łukaszewicz officially announced as COP28 delegate

The 2023 UN Climate Change Conference will convene from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and, keeping up with traditions, the European Committee of the Regions will send an eight-delegate representation. On behalf of the ECR Group is our ENVE Coordinator and deputy Marshal of Podlaskie region, Mr Sebastian Łukaszewicz.

In the May ENVE Commission meeting the delegation was officially announced and invited to discuss their priorities for COP28. Mr Łukaszewicz took the opportunity to highlight the responsibility of local and regional authorities in slowing down climate change but simultaneously pointed out that "particular attention should be paid to the fact that among its objectives the European Green Deal identifies a just transition as a key element of its reforms". In that regard, ambitious climate objectives should be implemented in a "fair manner", and take into account the wealth of countries, regions and, above all, their inhabitants, he stated.

In preparation for COP28 and in view of taking stock of progress in the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the deputy Marshal urged that work is carried out "with the regional and local authorities, who are best aware of the problems in their areas". Mr Łukaszewic emphasized that the implementation of climate goals is two-folded: "their impact should be considered, not only in the context of the achievement of climate objectives, but also the financial consequences for our most vulnerable citizens".
