Zero-tolerance approach key to address rising antisemitism in Europe

During a debate on the recent rise of antisemitism in Europe's regions and cities requested to be put on the agenda by Members of the ECR Group at the 158th CoR Plenary, President Marco Marsilio, First Vice-President Władysław Ortyl and Member Ádám Karácsony called for a zero-tolerance approach.

"Hatred of Jews goes hand in hand with hatred of the State of Israel and a lack of acceptance of Israel's right to exist. Therefore, leadership, determination and a zero-tolerance policy are essential to effectively combat antisemitism in European cities. It is crucial to act immediately, at all levels, with a special emphasis on education, to counter the normalisation of anti-Semitism" stressed President of the Abruzzo Region, Marco Marsilio.

The President called for closer Member State collaboration concerning the exchange of information, cooperation between police and intelligence bodies, also increasing cybersecurity and combating the phenomenon of illegal immigration, a potential vehicle for Islamic fundamentalism in Europe.

First Vice-President Władysław Ortyl said "at times it seems that we have not learnt from history" and called for a severe condemnation of acts of violence against Jewish citizens.

Vice-President of the County Council of Pest Megye, Ádám Karácsony underlined the critical role of interreligious dialogue in ensuring long term peace in Europe. "Antisemitism is an assault on the very fabric of European society. By actively encouraging interreligious dialogue, we can build bridges, counter false stereotypes, and ensure a future where European communities are able to coexist in harmony". As former rapporteur on the CoR opinion on Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life, Member Karácsony called on the CoR to give space to this initiative in its future agenda.
