The new CAP must protect European farmers rather than burden them, highlights Marshal Ortyl

Addressing Commissioner Hansen during a debate on the CAP post-2027, ECR 1st Vice-President Władysław Ortyl underlined that food security is crucial for the European continent, and therefore the importance of the CAP in ensuring that farmers and the agri-food sector remain competitive.

The future proposal of the European Commission should not focus solely on setting targets for farmers, especially when it comes to environmental commitments under CAP that risk to "impose disproportionate burdens on farmers". The Podkarpackie Marshal warned that this could "undermine the very core function of the CAP", which is to support their incomes and the sector's stability.

"I believe it is necessary to carry out a cumulative evaluation of the Green Deal-related legislation to assess its overall impact on the agri-food sector, including regulatory coherence, administrative burden, competitiveness, and the sector’s capacity to ensure food security and strategic resilience", Mr Ortyl underlined in the context of the upcoming discussions on the MFF proposal, set to be presented by the European Commission on July 16.

"We reiterate the importance of having a dedicated budget for agricultural policy as we are talking about the main instrument for European food sovereignty that must be able to ensure a fair income for farmers so that they can carry out their production activities", Mr Ortyl concluded.
