President Marsilio welcomes automaker production plan for Europe

The announcement by Stellantis of a “Made in Europe” investment plan for a total of €60 billions — while maintaining its commitment to Italian production with a €5 billions plan for innovation and allocating €1 billion to the Atessa plant — represents a major breakthrough for the automotive sector and for thousands of workers.

Atessa is not just an industrial site. It lies at the heart of Abruzzo’s economy — and today, its future is being secured through new investment, innovation, and a clear commitment to keep production in Europe.

This result did not happen by chance.

It is the outcome of a determined political effort led by our President — and President of the Abruzzo Region Marco Marsilio, to defend Europe’s industrial backbone and ensure a truly just transition. It also reflects sustained engagement with the European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, and EU institutions at the highest level, building on initiatives such as the opinion on “A Just Transition”, for which President Marsilio served as rapporteur and which was adopted by the European Committee of the Regions plenary in October 2024.

This progress is further strengthened by the clear and unwavering commitment of the Italian Government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, together with the Minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, to safeguard strategic industrial assets, support innovation, and ensure that production, jobs, and know-how remain anchored in Italy and across Europe. Their proactive engagement has been instrumental in creating the conditions for this investment and in defending the competitiveness of the European automotive sector.

At European level, this achievement also highlights the importance of a strong and cohesive political majority capable of delivering concrete results. The recent centre-right majority in the European Parliament, which made possible the adoption of the new EU system for Returns, demonstrates that when there is political clarity and determination, Europe can act effectively. A similar level of ambition and alignment is now needed in the automotive and industrial sectors, where it is equally essential to build a solid majority to protect European industry, support workers, and ensure a competitive and realistic transition.

Abruzzo is also an active member of the Automotive Regions Alliance (ARA), which it will chair in 2028, further demonstrating President Marsilio’s continuous commitment to defending the automotive sector.
