Building EU's strategic autonomy will increase its resilience to external pressures

Leading the CoR plenary debate on Europe's strategic autonomy was our ECR President, Marshal Władysław Ortyl, who gave an impassioned speech about how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global supply chain leading to a shortage of critical products in Europe, demonstrating that "borders hinder the free movement of people, goods and services".

Following on from President Ortyl's speech on Europe's strategic autonomy, Guido Castelli, Regional Minister of the Marche Region in Italy, took the floor during the CoR plenary to also share his insights on how Europe could play a more central role in the international arena and thereby build a "thriving future for our continent".

According to the ECR Member Roberto Ciambetti, head of the Italian delegation in the CoR and Conference on the Future of Europe CoR delegate, "we are now witnessing a univocal debate on the future of Europe, which seems to move towards a centralised vision of the Union that leaves no room for further interpretations".

Anna Magyar elected ECR Vice-President

In today's ECR Group meeting, traditionally held before each CoR plenary session, Ms Anna Magyar was nominated as Vice-President of the ECR Group in the CoR. A long-standing member of the European Committee of the Regions, Ms Magyar is also a former Member of the Hungarian Parliament and currently serves as Member of Csongrád-Csanád County Council in Hungary.

Conference on the Future of Europe: ECR members call for more powers for local and regional authorities

On Friday 21 and Saturday 22 January, the Conference on the Future of Europe Plenary took stock of recommendations made by two European Citizens' Panels and national Citizens' Panels. The debates revolved around the recommendations on European democracy, values and rights, rule of law, climate change, environment and health. Among the active participants were ECR President Władysław Ortyl, ECR Members in the CoR Mr Roberto Ciambetti and Mr Matteo Bianchi, as well our local delegate Ms Klaudia Szemereyné.
